We were a bit late to the MōVI party but now we’re flying with the system. The MōVI has changed the way we work, both in terms of shot design and storytelling.
The learning curve
The learning curve is relatively short and we achieved some lovely shots the first time out — and the speed at which you can work is totally liberating. We have 2 MōVI systems now, the M10 and the M15 and we’ve already done transatlantic flights with the M15. Now that we have a few MōVI projects under our belt we have a better understanding of the kind of shots that really work.
One of the big takeaways for us is just how fast you can work once you are set up and we love the variety of shots we can get with MōVI system. You can essentially achieve slider, dolly, jib and tracking moves. The device allows you to execute those kind of moves but in a fraction of the time compared to traditional solutions, for example you don’t need to lay down dolly track.
One thing we’ve focused on when using the MōVI is shot design. The last thing we want in our work is for technology to trump story and we’ve found that subtle movements work really well. We’re starting to take a less is more approach to the movement, this has come from carefully studying the footage from our MōVI work to date.
Walking follow shots, moving through spaces and shooting follow-cam action from a car all work well with the MōVI. We try to use the kit in a smart way and that includes blocking-out our shot design in pre-production – focusing on movement that helps advance the story.
Now that we’ve mastered our initial learning curve and have a better understanding of shot design with the MōVI, we couldn’t be more excited about the platform. We’ve been working primarily in majestic mode for our initial projects and we feel like we’ve learned how to make it sing with a single operator.
There’s a lot of competition in the gimbal space these days but we think the team at Freefly are building some of the most exciting tools in our industry today. When you compare other systems you have to looks at the software and support too — and that’s where Freefly and the MōVI system have a substantial leg up. The team at Freefly are passionate about filmmaking and understand the importance of reliability on set.
Moving forward we’re building the team and the kit for shooting in both dual operator mode and with 3 person MōVI team. We’re excited to add the MIMIC and the WEDGE soon, along with additional tools for MōVI our system. We have some exciting projects in the pipeline and plan to utilize all the power that the MōVI has to offer in our storytelling.
Be sure to check back soon, as we plan to drop some MōVI related projects that we’ve been working on!
