RED EPIC

The RED EPIC camera continues its production push. Pre production EPIC-M cameras are out in the wild now with James Cameron recently purchasing 50 of them for his latest project and apparently Peter Jackson is using 30 Epics to shoot the Hobbit. With the tragedy in Japan, EPIC-X production was delayed but with a turnaround in the supply chain we should expect to see the various stages of EPIC-X start shipping in the fall.

Technicolor CineStyle Test

Here is a quick and completely unscientific test using the Technicolor CineStyle Picture Style. I’ve been doing a bit of shooting with the CineStyle Profile this past week for a project we’ve been working on and the results so far have been great.

Recommended Canon EOS camera settings with Technicolor CineStyle:

Sharpness: 0
Contrast: -4
Saturation: -2
Color Tone: 0
ISO: a multiple of 160

Canon and Technicolor: CineStyle Profile

Updated 4.30.11: The Technicolor CineStyle Profile is now available for download.

Technicolor has announced it has formed a strategic alliance with Canon USA and this news is interesting for several reasons. We should see a new CineStyle picture style from Technicolor, one of the most respected names in the film industry related to color. And this indicates that Canon is taking the HDSLR platform seriously.

Infographic: Should I work for free?

Here is a brilliant diagram by illustrator Jessica Hische. Consult this handy chart to see if you should work for free. The short answer is no, unless it’s for your mom.

Super 8 film

Super 8 has such a beautiful and organic aesthetic. Shooting Super 8 film is also very refreshing in today’s digital cinema world – where the pixel peepers debate the quality of the latest and greatest cameras and formats online.

I often get asked what is the best plug-in to use to get that film look; I say shoot film if you can!

Running a business

Heading into a recent meeting with my financial adviser I was feeling a bit apprehensive about things. I wanted to be sure I was on the right track. Do we take on additional staff to meet the demand? Also, how do we set out to achieve non-economic goals, such as time for personal creative endeavors, workplace flexibility and still have family and social time?

Cyclocross

This is a personal project shot at the US National Cyclocross Championships in Bend, Oregon. The video features the Women’s Masters race, going for the US National stars and stripes jersey. These chicks rock!

This was shot on a 7D HDSLR with Zeiss lenses.

ND filters

Screw on ND filters are an essential part of a DSLR filmmakers toolbox. With a traditional video camera you obviously have built in ND but on DSLR camera you need use an ND filter to get that sexy selective depth of field (DOF) in bright light.

First up is the Light Craft Workshop Fader ND mark II. This Variable ND filter will literally change the way you shoot. This is a single variable ND filter and you change the density by rotating the filter. The Fader ND gives you between 2 to 8 stops of filtration and is a great solution when doing quick set-ups and run ‘n gun shooting. All you do is set the desired aperture and shutter speed (usually 1/50th and ISO 160) and then you dial in the exposure by turning the variable ND wheel. Brilliant.

Zeiss ZE primes

I recently purchased a few Zeiss primes for our Canon HDSLR rig. The 28mm f/2, 50mm f/1.4 and the 85mm f/1.4. I had rented several Canon L lenses to test and didn’t like the ultra short focus throw for video.

Don’t get me wrong, the Canon lenses are fantastic and if I were to prioritize stills over video I think I would have gone Canon, but after I tested a Zeiss lens I was sold. The Ziess ZE lenses are manual only and have a very solid build. The feel of the focus ring is much more cinematic compared to the Canon glass thanks to the increased focus throw. Plus the Zeiss image, the micro contrast and focus fall-off (bokeh) are just amazing.
